Due Date: 11:59pm HOL Time - April 30, 2024
Please send all assignments to [email protected] with the subject "Parseltongue - HW3 - HOL Name" and include your HOL Name and House (in either English or Parseltongue) in the body of the email.
Homework 3
Vinth Hagvarts - 10 points (plus up to 2 bonus points for particularly well written work)
Write at least 25 words, in complete Parseltongue sentences, about the image above. If you're having trouble getting to 25 words by writing about what's there, you can use ʃe to help write about what is NOT there.
(NOTE: "Vinth Hagvarts" might be the most challenging task you have been set so far because it asks you to express yourself, freely, in Parseltongue. I am aware of this challenge, though, and will grade it leniently. I have faith in all of you; you'll hit 25 words before you know it!)
Combining Sentences - 3 points each (6 total)
1. Translate the following sentences into English:
Tasi houk ʃena. Tasi houk fasi kata giʃe.
2. Combine the two sentences into a single Parseltongue sentence.
Critical Thinking - 3 points each (6 total)
1. What Hogwarts house are you in? Give your answer as a complete sentence in Parseltongue; remember the Parseltongue names for the Hogwarts Houses were given in the last assignment.
2. Did your answer to Part 1 contain a verb? Why or why not? (NOTE: Snakes have not come to a consensus on this. As such, a reasonable argument for either side of the issue will receive full credit.)
Sa or Ʃe? - 2 points each (8 points total)
Are the following statements true or not? Answer in Parseltongue with "Sa" or "Ʃe" as appropriate. If the answer is "Ʃe", then reword the statement so that the answer would become "Sa"!
1. Every sentence in Parseltongue has a verb.
2. You can express the English words "I" and "you" in Parseltongue.
3. Parseltongue verbs do not 'conjugate' or change when the subject changes.
4. A Parseltongue word is considered a ʃe-word if and only if its final two letters are ʃe.

Extra Credit 3
NOTE: The first two parts of this extra credit should be done with posts on the class discussion forums! When you are are finished with the extra credit, send a message to the class email [email protected] with the subject line Parseltongue - EC3 - HOL Name with links to your posts for the prompts below, as well as your "Past, Present, and Future Tense" essay if applicable.
Note also that I am offering 40 points total of extra credit; you can choose to attempt up to 30 of them - e.g. if you discover two words, you should drop either the 'Critical Inference' or the 'Past, Present and Future Tense' prompt.

Critical Inference - 5 points each (10 total)
I showed Basl a few more images; he described each of them with a sentence in Parseltongue. The images are linked below (with small English language descriptions directly underneath serving the role of alt text), along with how Basl described each of them. Note that the English and Parseltongue descriptions are NOT necessarily direct translations of each other!
Image 1: 'Tasi hasli ara fasi pard abna aʃe rine.'
Image shows an open book; a red rose is in on top of the pages, casting a dark shadow.
Image 2: 'Fasi peslʃis gorna fasi fasar sliʃe sobne.'
Image shows a fluffy, fat cat lying on his back on a brown, unpaved path. Green grass grows on either side of the cat.
Image 3: 'Fasi doʃe ʃira asa gara fasi nigi bana gariʃe rine.'
Image shows a dog standing on the edge of a clear lake. The dog's fur is white in front and brown in back. The dog wears a reddish pink collar.
To earn the full ten points, please do the following two things.
1. Pick one word from one of those three images that did not appear in Lesson 2 or 3. Post in the thread "Lesson 3 - Critical Inference" with an explanation of what you think that word means and why. (DO NOT use later lessons or the class word list as your only explanation!)
2. In the same thread, reply to someone else's post explaining whether or not you agree with their translation. Make sure to choose a different word than the one you chose for the previous part! If no one else has replied to this post by April 25 I will make my own post for you to reply to.
(REMINDER: I will be more than happy to explain any of the images for you in English upon request.)
Discussion - 10 points (can be repeated for 20 points total)
Discover another word, which can be of any part of speech, by talking to the class snakes. In the thread "Lesson 3 - Discover Some More Words", you should make a post containing:
-An undiscovered word in Parseltongue (i.e. it does not appear elsewhere in the first three lessons or assignments, the Vocabulary section of this class, or in an earlier post in the thread)
-Its translation into English
-The way you discovered the word (e.g. if you showed 'your' snake an image, post a link to the image and tell me the snake's response)
NOTE: If you seek to earn 20 points from this part, you should discover two words and make a separate post for each word.
Past, Present, and Future Tense - 10 points
Parseltongue does not distinguish past and present tense, but does have a way to distinguish future tense from the other two. Why do you think Parseltongue has special words for future tense but not for past tense? You can use words and sentences in English and Parseltongue as appropriate to support your point, but make sure your response is at least 75 words for full credit!
