Due Date: 11:59pm HOL Time - March 31, 2024
Please send all assignments to [email protected] with the subject "Parseltongue - HW2 - HOL Name" and include your HOL Name and House (in either English or Parseltongue) in the body of the email.
Homework 2
Hagvarts Slehara Matching - 2 points each (8 total)
Match each colour to the Hogwarts house that uses it. But because this is Parseltongue class, both the House names and colours will be given in Parseltongue!
A. Grifindor 1. ara
B. Hufslpuf 2. bira
C. Revinksla 3. tira
D. Slitherin 4. vera
Basic Questions - 3 points each (12 total)
Below are some basic questions in English and in Parseltongue. If you see English, translate it to Parseltongue and vice versa.
1. Fasi athne teʃ?
2. Tasi sarna vuʃ?
3. When did this get cold?
4. What is this large thing?
(HINT: Snakes would generally not need to have separate words to express "did", "get", and "thing" when asking basic questions.)
NOTE ALSO: There are indeed two valid interpretations for the first question; I will accept either one as correct. In a real conversation, you would use context clues to determine which was meant.
Parts of Speech - 1 point each (6 total)
Given the word in Parseltongue, determine its part of speech (you are free to use either English grammatical terms, like "noun"/"verb"/"adjective", or Parseltongue grammatical terms, like "si-word"). NOTE: Not all of these words can be found in the lesson!
1. tasi
2. pura
3. tina
4. derne
5. ʃina
6. vuʃ
Critical Thinking - 4 points
I showed the Slytherin baslisik Basl the image below image and he said "Tasi so sora." Based on his response, what do you think 'so' means, and why?

Extra Credit 2
NOTE: All parts of this extra credit should be done with posts on the class discussion forums! When you are are finished with the extra credit, send a message to the class email [email protected] with the subject line Parseltongue - EC2 - HOL Name with links to your posts for the prompts below.
Critical Inference - 10 points (5 points each)
I showed Basl a few more images; he described each of them with a sentence in Parseltongue. The images are linked below (with small English language descriptions directly underneath serving the role of alt text), along with how Basl described each of them. Note that the English and Parseltongue descriptions are NOT necessarily direct translations of each other!
IMAGE 1: 'Tasi doʃe kura fasi stabsle gara sliʃe athne.'
Image shows a black dog lying under a brown table next to a white bed.
IMAGE 2: 'Isisi naus gira asa ʃira fasi khair ara raʃe sobne.'
Image shows a red patterned chair on a bent red patterned carpet. On the chair are three mice, holding and looking at a book.
IMAGE 3: 'Fasi ʃen tina fasi snek ʃena koeslʃe.'
Image shows a large, gorgeous python curled up in brown sand. A cute young boy is lying on his back, snuggling and hugging the python.
To earn the full ten points, please do the following two things.
1. Pick one word from one of those three images that did not appear in Lesson 2. Post in the thread "Lesson 2 - Critical Inference" with an explanation of what you think that word means and why. (DO NOT use later lessons or the class word list as your only explanation!)
2. In the same thread, reply to someone else's post explaining whether or not you agree with their translation. Make sure to choose a different word than the one you chose for the previous part! If no one else has replied to the thread by March 25 I will make my own post for you to reply to.
(REMINDER: I will be more than happy to explain any of the images for you in English upon request.)
Choose your own Snake - 10 points
Parseltongue is much easier if you have a snake of your own to talk to! For this part, I want you to find a snake from the class ophidiarium that you can consult for the duration of the class. For this prompt, I want you make a post in the thread "Lesson 2 - Choose your own Snake" to include the following three things:
1. A link to a picture of the snake you chose. (If you find a picture on the Muggle "internet" of a snake that looks like your chosen snake, that is perfectly fine.)
2. At least 50 words in English about your snake. Some questions you might want to think about are: What type of snake is it? What is its personality like? How willing is it to answer your questions? How does its dialect of Parseltongue compare to the dialect I am teaching you?
3. Two descriptive words in Parseltongue about your snake.
Discover a Noun - 10 points
Now that you have chosen a class snake, it is time to see if the snake can teach you a noun! In the thread "Lesson 2 - Discover a Noun", you should make a post containing:
-An undiscovered noun in Parseltongue (i.e. it does not appear elsewhere in the first two lessons or assignments, the Vocabulary section of this class, or in an earlier post in the thread)
-Its translation into English
-The way you discovered the noun (e.g. if you showed 'your' snake an image, post a link to the image and tell me the snake's response)
Interaction with your classmates is encouraged for all three parts!
